I'm sitting here watching Children in Need - Auntie's annual telethon in aid of the little people who are our future. How lovely. Anyway, it annoys me: the piss-poor musical renditions, the "comical" japes of BBC presenters doing things that we'd next expect them too (how low can the newsreaders go this year..? update: quite low, although Andrew Marr and Jeremy Vine haven't cross-dressed). Anyway, I have the off switch, it's there for me to use.
Also this week, Aljazeera International finally launched following many delays. Given those delays they maybe could have made it not shake in the first 3 minutes of launch, maybe not over-layed a random grey line crawling down the screen. Given it was meant to be HD, why is so soft? Why is it 14:9 letterbox instead of the 16:9 it's (most likely) produced in? And the set could maybe have been less inspired by Sky News, with a BBC News style desk, and Broken News style interludes. For something so hyped rumored to have been rehearsed for 3 months, it feels slow and not really like a news channel at all... The tsunami in Japan broke just after launch, but aside from one two-way to their Kuala Lumpur centre, they steadfastly stuck to their agenda...
So why don't I turn it off? It's like when you've a mouth ulcer and your tongue keeps prodding it. No good can result, but still you do - you do it to yourself, you do, you and no-one else...
